Electronics Development Institute (ELDI) was formerly known as Centre for Adaptation of Technology (CAT). It was established in1988 by the government of the old Anambra state when Colonel Robert Akonobi was the military governor of the state. It occupies 87 hectares of land that stretches from KM 80 on Enugu/Onitsha expressway towards Ukwulu town. It comprised of three departments: i. Design and simulation ii. Electronics iii. Foundry
In 1992, the federal government of Nigeria through the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) took over, inheriting all the assets and liabilities of CAT. The agency appointed late Dr. Frank C. Obi, an electronics engineer, the acting, Director/Chief Executive. It had the department of Information Technology and other research and developments for conducting basic and applied research. It also had service departments of administration, human resources, finance and accounts.
In 2004, Federal Government changed the name to Electronics Development Institute (ELDI) to enable all research institutes under NASENI assume names in line with their mandates. The institute comprises of various electronics based departments, Information Communication Technology (ICT), central workshop for project packaging/collaborations and service departments (administration, account, audit and permanent site development)
